Course Description
Grades 10-12
Students will be enrolled in this class for the entire year. Fusion Reading is a two year program designed for students in Sr High who have a continued need for development of reading skills. It is a highly structured course designed to teach an array of reading strategies within a scaffolded scope and sequence of instruction. The course includes strategies, guided and independent practice, feedback, and ongoing assessments for monitoring progress. A major goal of Fusion Reading is to increase student motivation, engagement, and reading outcomes through word recognition skills and linguistic comprehension.
Major Topics Covered
A major goal of Fusion Reading is to increase student motivation, engagement, and reading outcomes. Reading instruction is built upon two primary components: The first is word recognition, consisting of advanced phonics, decoding, word recognition, and fluency skills and strategies. The second is linguistic comprehension, consisting of instructional components designed to enhance students’ skills in making predictions, summarizing, building a strong vocabulary, and using reading strategies to succeed in taking standardized tests.
Class Information
Reading class meets every other day and is a full year class unless criteria is met.
-Criteria includes gain in class performance, readiness for District Testing and Meeting or Exceeding the standards on the MN Comprehensive Reading Assessments for Grades 7, 8, and 10.
Learner Outcomes
Students will develop reading skills
Students will learn Literary and Text Elements
Students will read and identify different genres
Students will learn and practice vocabulary skills
Students will practice and perform listening, speaking, and viewing skills
Materials Needed for Class
-Charged Chromebook
-Folder to keep in the classroom
-Pencil
**Phones should be put away before you enter the classroom.
Evaluation:
-Pass (80% or higher) Fail (79% or below)
-Grades based on: classwork, assessments and participation
Materials Used in Class
-Daily Reading Practice workbooks
-Novels and applications to support Grade level benchmarks
-Possible Fusion novels for year two-We Beat the Streets, The Raft, Unwind, Runner, and novels from the Bluford series
-SCOPE and Jr. Scholastic articles
Reading goals for you are:
-Demonstrate independence
-Build strong reading skills
-Comprehend as well as critique
-Value evidence presented to you as a reader
-Use technology and digital media strategically and capably
Test Preparation
Students will review and use multiple different reading strategies.
Students will learn Greek and Latin Roots.
Students will learn new vocabulary stratgies
Students will set individual and group goals for performance.

Classroom Management Plan
Classroom Policies/Procedures
Be Prompt: You are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings at the start of class. If you are not in the classroom you are tardy. You should come to class with a pencil/pen everyday. As soon as you come into class, you should grab your materials and start on Daily Reading Practice.
If you are tardy, you will receive a verbal warning and it will be marked in Schoolview. After three tardies, and each tardy thereafter, detention will be assigned. (Every 3 tardies counts as 1 day absent.)
Only one student is allowed out of the room at a time. You may only leave with a pass from a teacher during work time.
If you need to use the bathroom you MUST have a 7th grade bathroom pass. If you do not have a pass you will need to make up 5 minutes with me during your lunch. If you do not make up the time, you will be given a bathroom pass.
You need to be in your seat ready to learn at the start of class. At the end of the hour, I will dismiss you from your seat. There will be NO LINING UP at the door.
Be Responsible: Cell phones are not to be used during class. If they are being used, they will be confiscated and brought to the office.
Be Attentive: When the teacher is talking, you need to stop and give your full attention to her.
Be Considerate:Always respect the people, equipment, and furnishings in this room You need to adjust your voice level to suit the activity, follow directions the first time they are given, and observe all rules in the student handbook.
Bathroom passes
You must ask permission to use the bathroom pass. The bathroom pass is a privilege to use and will only be used in an emergency. I will give you two passes each quarter. You must have a pass to use the bathroom. If you need to use the pass and do not have a pass, you will need to make up 5 minutes with me during your lunch. If you fail to make up the time, you will be assigned a detention.
If YOU choose to break a rule
First time: Warning to correct the discussed behavior-possible detention
Second time: See the teacher after class-possible detention
Third time: Sent to the office and contact home
Chromebook Policies
Chromebooks must remain under your desk unless you are instructed to take them out.
Chromebooks are only to be used for Reading related activies.
Teachers have the right to look through your Chromebook.
If you are using the Chromebook inappropriately, you will be given one warning. If the behavior continues, it will be taken away.
1:1 Device Management Plan
As a member of a 1:1 program, it is your responsibility to bring your device to class each day charged and ready for use. Failure to do so will result in your being sent to the Media Center to receive a violation. If your device is in need of charging it will be kept and charged for the remainder of the class hour or until it reaches 50%. It is your responsibility to pick it up between classes. Loaner devices are available only for devices that are mailed in for repair.

Violation #2 - Detention
Violation #3 - Detention and loss of privilege to take device home for the period of 20 school days.
